The future of physical console games changed dramatically within the space of a single week. Rockstar Games confirmed that the boxed version of Grand Theft Auto VI will contain a download code rather than a game disc. Days later, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that physical disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028. The two decisions do not mean that existing PlayStation discs will suddenly stop working, but they establish a clear direction: for new PlayStation releases, the traditional game disc now has an official end date.

What Rockstar Announced About GTA VI

Rockstar Games opened pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI in June 2026 and confirmed an unusual detail about the game’s retail edition. Customers will still be able to purchase a box from selected retailers, but the box will contain a code for downloading the game rather than a playable disc.

Rockstar Support states explicitly that a disc will not be included. The company says the code-based box supports pre-loading, allowing customers to begin downloading the game on November 12 before its November 19, 2026 launch.

That makes the GTA VI package “physical” mainly in the retail and collectible sense. Buyers receive packaging and a redeemable code, but the game itself must be downloaded and attached to a platform account.

Rockstar has not said that a traditional disc edition will definitely never appear later. As of July 22, 2026, however, the only officially confirmed boxed edition contains a download code and no disc.

Sony’s January 2028 Announcement

On July 1, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it will discontinue physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028.

After that date, newly released PlayStation games will be offered through the PlayStation Store and through retailers in digital formats only. Sony said the change reflects consumer preferences shifting away from physical discs and toward digital access.

The announcement applies to new PlayStation game releases. It is not an announcement about music CDs, Blu-ray films, Ultra HD Blu-ray movies or every optical disc manufactured by the wider Sony Group.

Did GTA VI Cause Sony’s Decision?

There is no public evidence that Rockstar’s decision directly caused Sony’s announcement. Sony described its policy as a response to broader consumer and entertainment-industry trends rather than to one particular game.

The timing nevertheless made the shift impossible to ignore. GTA VI is one of the most anticipated entertainment releases in the world. When a game of that size can be sold in a retail box without a disc, it demonstrates that publishers no longer consider the disc essential even for major launches.

Sony’s announcement then turned a significant individual release into a platform-wide direction. GTA VI showed what a disc-free retail product looks like; Sony established when that model will become standard for new PlayStation games.

Why Sony Is Moving Away From Game Discs

Sony says digital media now significantly outpaces physical discs among its community. Reuters reported that digital downloads represented approximately 80% of Sony’s full-game software sales during fiscal year 2025.

For publishers and platform holders, digital distribution removes several parts of the traditional retail process. There are no discs to manufacture, package, transport or replace. A digital release can also be made available worldwide without estimating how many physical copies each retailer or region will require.

Modern games have also weakened the old distinction between a physical game and a downloaded one. Many disc releases already require large updates, additional downloadable content or an internet connection for parts of the experience. Some discs contain an incomplete launch version, while others mainly serve as a licence key that allows the console to install and run game data.

GTA VI takes that development one step further. The box remains, but the disc disappears entirely.

What Happens to Existing PlayStation Discs?

Sony states that the transition will not affect games already released on disc or games scheduled to receive disc editions before January 2028. This is therefore a future cutoff for new releases, not an immediate cancellation of the existing physical PlayStation catalogue.

A PlayStation disc purchased today does not stop functioning simply because Sony has announced the end of new-disc production. The announcement also does not say that existing disc drives will be remotely disabled.

Several details remain unanswered, however. Sony has not explained whether future PlayStation hardware will continue to include or support disc drives, whether older games will continue receiving new physical print runs after the cutoff, or whether exceptions could exist for limited editions.

Until Sony provides more information, those questions should not be treated as settled.

What Players Lose in a Digital-Only PlayStation Market

The Used-Game Market

A physical disc can normally be sold, traded, lent or given to another person. A download code is usually tied to an account after redemption and cannot be transferred in the same way.

Moving new PlayStation games entirely to digital distribution therefore removes the traditional second-hand life of those releases. Players lose the ability to recover part of a game’s cost by selling it, while buyers lose access to cheaper used copies.

Sharing and Lending

Physical games make informal sharing simple: one person hands a disc to another. Digital platforms may support household sharing or account-based access, but these systems operate under platform rules and do not reproduce the freedom of passing around an independent physical copy.

Retail Price Competition

Physical games can be discounted independently by retailers trying to clear stock or compete with one another. Sony says retailers will still be able to sell new games in digital formats after January 2028, so the PlayStation Store will not necessarily become the only seller.

Even so, a market built around redeemable codes is fundamentally different from one built around transferable discs. Once a code is redeemed, there is no used copy to resell.

Preservation

A disc is not a perfect archive. Games may require patches, servers can close and physical media can deteriorate. But discs provide an independent object that collectors, researchers and preservation groups can retain.

Digital-only releases depend more heavily on storefront availability, account access, authentication systems and the platform holder’s long-term infrastructure. Sony has said nothing in this announcement about a permanent preservation system for games released after the cutoff.

Internet and Storage Requirements

Large digital releases require sufficient storage and a connection capable of downloading them. GTA VI’s code-based box illustrates the issue: purchasing the product from a physical shop does not avoid the need to download the game.

This matters most to players with slow connections, data limits or limited console storage. A disc can also require installations and updates, but a code-only package provides no game data locally at all.

What Players Gain From Digital Distribution

The digital model also offers genuine conveniences. Games can be purchased without travelling to a shop or waiting for delivery. Pre-loading allows large releases to be downloaded before launch, and players can switch between installed games without changing discs.

Digital distribution also prevents shortages of standard editions. A store cannot run out of downloadable copies in the same way it can run out of discs. Publishers can release games simultaneously across many regions without producing and shipping separate quantities of physical stock.

For players who already buy almost everything digitally, Sony’s 2028 policy may change very little. The greatest effect will be felt by collectors, second-hand buyers, game lenders and people who deliberately choose physical editions to maintain more control over their libraries.

Will Collector’s Editions Still Exist?

GTA VI suggests that physical packaging can survive even when the playable disc does not. Publishers could continue selling boxes containing art books, maps, statues, steel cases or other collectibles alongside a download code.

That would preserve the merchandise side of collector’s editions without preserving physical ownership of the software. A steel case with no disc may still look attractive on a shelf, but it does not provide an independent playable copy of the game.

Sony’s announcement does not explain how limited editions will be handled after January 2028. It confirms only that new PlayStation games will be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and retailers.

What the Decision Means for Game Retailers

Retailers are not being removed from the process completely. Sony specifically says that new games will remain available from retailers in digital formats. Shops may therefore sell redemption codes, prepaid products, accessories, consoles and collector packages even when no disc is present.

Nevertheless, the value of visiting a physical game shop changes when the store can no longer offer a transferable copy. Retailers may still participate in the first sale, but they lose the recurring trade created when the same disc is bought, sold and exchanged several times.

The change will also make older disc releases more distinct from newer digital-only games. Physical PlayStation collections could become a closed historical catalogue rather than a format that continues with every new generation of releases.

What PlayStation Owners Should Do Before 2028

  • Do not panic-buy every physical release. The cutoff applies to new games from January 2028 and does not immediately invalidate existing discs.
  • Buy physical editions deliberately. Prioritise games you genuinely want to own, lend, preserve or resell.
  • Check what is actually on the disc. Some physical releases require large downloads or provide limited offline functionality.
  • Secure your digital account. Use a unique password, two-step verification and an up-to-date recovery method.
  • Plan for storage. Digital-only libraries require enough internal or supported external storage for large installations.
  • Keep purchase records. Save receipts and confirmation emails for expensive digital purchases and collector products.
  • Follow Sony’s hardware announcements. The July 2026 statement does not reveal whether future PlayStation systems will retain disc compatibility.

Common Misunderstandings About the Announcement

“Sony is ending every kind of CD and Blu-ray disc.”

False. The announcement concerns physical discs for new games released on PlayStation consoles from January 2028. It is not a company-wide end to music CDs or Blu-ray movies.

“All PlayStation discs stop working in 2028.”

False. Sony says games released on disc before the cutoff are unaffected by this transition.

“GTA VI will not have any retail box.”

False. Rockstar has confirmed a boxed retail product. The important difference is that the box contains a download code rather than a game disc.

“GTA VI caused Sony to end game discs.”

That has not been established. The announcements happened close together, but Sony attributed its decision to wider consumer trends.

“After 2028, games can only be bought directly from Sony.”

Not exactly. Sony says retailers will still be able to sell games in digital formats, although the company has not yet explained how broad that retail system will be in every region.

The End of the PlayStation Disc Era

GTA VI’s code-only box is more than an unusual packaging decision. It shows how the idea of a “physical edition” can survive after the physical game itself has disappeared.

Sony’s announcement goes further. Starting in January 2028, the company will stop producing discs for new PlayStation releases and make digital distribution the platform standard. Existing discs remain part of the ecosystem, but the physical PlayStation library will no longer expand in the traditional way.

For players who value convenience, the transition may feel like the natural conclusion of a change that has been happening for years. For collectors, used-game buyers and preservationists, it removes choices that digital licences cannot fully replace.

The most important distinction is also the simplest: Sony is not ending all discs in 2028. It is ending physical discs for new PlayStation games. That narrower decision is still one of the biggest changes in console-game ownership since digital storefronts became standard.
